Planters Seed & Spice Co

It's a unique place with a lot of supplies for gardening, garden spaces, seed starting and pottin, as well as seeds for garden and lawn. Also a good place to buy bulk spices, you can smell them when you enter the store. The look and feel is of a general store from decades ago with wood floors, practical shelving and displays, and friendly staff. Unfortunately it is in downtown KCMO and the parking and traffic are "inconvenient", which is a shame because it didn't used to be that way not very long ago.

For generations, my family has shopped at Planters. We love the selections and the prices!

I want to preface this by saying this place is a lil piece of heaven.. Everything about it.. The seed options, the spices, the building itself, the creaking floors.. I was in my Happy Place.. Sadly, The Staff what was there the day I went made everything else miserable.. I asked a question, I got looked at like I was a bother.. Not one person said Hello.. All 3 were rude and ruined my first experience in the Store.. I originally came in for a few Spices.. We wanted to look around a bit more but decided to just Check Out and leave.. I was so excited to go in there that day.. Husband even drove 45 mins out of the way so he could take me.. Staff is EVERYTHING..

I visited Planters in late July 2025 and as soon as we walked inside, the staff made it VERY clear that Black people are not welcome there. Three employees were working that day. An older man and two females. One female employee kept her back turned to us as we waited to pay for our items and she was standing right in front of us. The older man had to come over to the register bc she wouldn't help us lol. Entire staff was cold and rude. I planted a seed of kindness before I left. Hopefully it will take root because there are thorns and thistles working at that establishment.

I love finding local businesses that are a great substitution for a big box chain. Planters has a huge selection of products for your gardening needs! Definitely check it out.
